Good points made by Henry below. These economics professors (and the media in general) make no attempt to define the size of the problem in the first place. Most people think about 20 to 25 % of our GDP went to the EU as manufactured goods, but in reality it is only 7.8 % - look it up. There were deliberately misled by the BBC, who never corrected remainers when they said '44 % of our trade was with the EU' and subsequently thought that bout half of this was manufactured goods - not realising that it was only 44 % of our export sales, which is entirely different. And like I say, the economists make no effort to start from the correct position in the arguments.

On a critical note, this "brexit risk" is simply derived from domestic value added in exports. The color map does not look surprising to me simply because the UK is smaller than the EU, and is therefore expected to have a higher density of export to the EU than vice versa. Furthermore, there is no measure given for how much this export value is actually at risk. So to suggest that there will be a strong economic impact is based on the assumption that trade is going to be significantly reduced. This may or may not be true, but I don't think you can draw such conclusions based on this analysis.

Strictly speaking, it wasn’t “52% of theUK population” that voted for Brexit, but 52% of those who voted in the referendum - about a third of the overall electorate. The campaign was extremely unsatisfactory. If it had been legally a mandatory referendum, the British courts would have ordered it invalid because of fraud. It was technically an advisory referendum, but the Conservative government treated it as if it was mandatory. The case against leaving was not adequately argued because the Labour Party was led at the time by Jeremy Corbyn, whose extreme left-wing views coincided, for opposite reasons, with the extreme right-wing views of the Brexiteers. Also, the Remainers in the ConservativeParty (including the Prime Minister, the Cabinet and most of its MPs) failed to challenge the Leave campaign effectively. The purpose of Cameron’s negotiations, his referendum, and the Tories’ adoption of Brexit was less dissatisfaction with the EU than about preserving the Conservative Party. As noted in the lecture, people voted to leave the EU for extraneous reasons: nationalism and xenophobia; rejection of globalisation; disenchantment with conventional politicians in general; and decades of lying anti-EU propaganda (which appealed to and fomented those feelings) in the press. One notable lying propagandist was Boris Johnson. So there was no rational and truthful reason behind most of the decision. The campaign was led by interests who sought an outcome that would be/will be seriously harmful to millions of ordinary citizens who were fraudulently induced to vote for it. Wish us luck!

Very interesting insights, and very well explained, thank you. I also would put my bet that B Johnson will sign almost anything, because he's tied it to his personal career. But he will only do so in the very last minute, so he can sell it at home as a victory. What is baffling is how the UK keeps insisting on getting things which they know the EU can't give them, and which they as a member would have strongly objected to giving to any non-member.

Brexit was the result of Tories cat fight. It has been used as a diversion tactic to draw the attention of the public away from the real problem by twittering on about fantastic trade deals that would put everything right which they put wrong. So who is going to see these billions made by these fantasy trade deals? Let me guess.🤔 Certainly not the British public because they will carry on living from hand to mouth as they have always done. Public amenities will carry on being underfunded. It will not change anything. The UK will still be on its arse like it was before the Tories signed them up to the EEC (as it was called then) in 1973.

We survived the trials and tribulations of two world wars. I'm sure that leaving the EUSSR won't be a long term problem. Project fear failed first time round so don't try it on again.
